Today (December 9), the Vietnamese team will face the Lao team away, in the opening match of Group B - AFF Cup 2024. This is an opportunity for coach Kim Sang-sik and his team to seek their first victory in the journey to conquer the Southeast Asian gold cup.
Compared to his predecessor Troussier, Mr. Kim Sang-sik prioritizes using veteran players. Duy Manh, Tien Linh, Quang Hai, Hoang Duc, Van Thanh, Tien Dung... all have a lot of experience in international competitions, especially the AFF Cup arena.
With a squad and professional quality that is considered superior, the Vietnamese team is predicted to easily defeat the Lao team in the opening match, even with a big win.
However, Quang Hai and his teammates are not allowed to be complacent. Because 3 years ago, the Vietnamese team struggled to win 2-0 against Laos in the opening match of the AFF Cup 2020 (held in 2021 due to the pandemic).
As for Laos, the home team has not had the best preparation for the AFF Cup 2024. New coach Ha Hyeok-jun has only been in charge of the team for exactly 4 months. Besides, they do not have many international matches to practice. Most recently, Laos held Thailand to a 1-1 draw in the FIFA Days friendly match last November.
The match between Vietnam and Laos will take place at 8:00 p.m. on December 9 and will be broadcast live on VTV2 and FPT Play.
