Although rated higher, controlling the game and having 21 shots, U23 Malaysia still had to leave Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in surprise when they lost 0-2 to U23 Philippines in the opening match of Group A, 2025 U23 Southeast Asian Championship (evening of July 15).
Although the ball possession rate was superior to 70% and many opportunities were created, U23 Malaysia showed ineffectiveness in finishing, as well as the lack of confidence in defense.
The New Straits Times (Malaysia) has frankly criticized the lackluster debut of coach Nafuzi Zain. The newspaper wrote: "Malaysia has learned a lesson from the Philippines. We performed a face that lacked cohesion and creativity despite overwhelming technical statistics. We need a different start, not like this."
Meanwhile, The Star newspaper said that this was an inexorable defeat when looking at the number of opportunities Malaysia created. Even Malaysia's Bernama news agency praised the fighting spirit and discipline that the opponent showed throughout the 90 minutes.
Speaking after the match, coach Nafuzi Zain admitted that his team entered the match with anxiety and loss of concentration, especially in the defensive system.
"We tried to control the game after being behind, but when the score was 0-2, things became very difficult. I apologize for not being able to bring home victory. The whole team will improve their defense in the remaining two matches," the coach affirmed.
However, the challenge is getting bigger for U23 Malaysia with the two opponents U23 Brunei (18.7) and host U23 Indonesia (21.7). Therefore, many opinions say that U23 Malaysia is at risk of being eliminated early in this year's tournament.
