Overactive Bladder (OAB) is a common urinary tract disorder, especially in older adults. Common symptoms include sudden urine loss, frequent urination during the day and night, and even urinary incontinence. Although there are many causes of OAB such as nerve damage, inflammation or hormonal changes, an equally important factor is the daily diet.
According to Dr. Dheera Samdariya, urologist and gynecologist at Jaslok Hospital (Mumbai, India), changing the appropriate menu can help control symptoms and improve the quality of life for people with OAB.
What is an over-exercised bladder?
Overective bladder (Overactive Bladder - OAB) is a condition in which the bladder contracts uncontrollably, causing a feeling of frequent need to urinate, even when the bladder is not full. This greatly affects the quality of life, causing discomfort and anxiety for patients.
Why is diet important?
Some foods and drinks can stimulate the bladder, increasing the frequency and severity of symptoms. On the contrary, choosing the right diet can help soothe the bladder, reduce uncontrolled cramps and improve urinary function.
Eating changes to apply
Limit caffeinated drinks: Coffee, black tea, carbonated soft drinks, and other caffeinated drinks can stimulate the bladder, increasing the feeling of urine problems.
Avoid alcoholic beverages: Alcohol not only dehydrates but also stimulates the bladder, making symptoms worse.
Reduce salt intake: Salt can cause the body to retain water, increase pressure on the bladder and cause discomfort.
Limit spicy and highly acidic foods: Spicy spices, lemon juice, oranges, tomatoes can stimulate the bladder lining.
Drink enough water, but properly: You should divide the amount of water you drink during the day instead of drinking a lot at once to avoid putting a lot of pressure on the bladder.
Increase fiber-rich foods: Helps prevent constipation, an indirect cause of pressure on the bladder.
Note
Dr. Samdariya says a reasonable diet plays an important role in controlling overactive bladder. By eliminating foods and drinks that stimulate the bladder while increasing the necessary nutrients, you can significantly reduce uncomfortable symptoms and improve the quality of life.
