According to experts from the US National Watermelon Promotion Association, whole watermelons should be stored in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight. The ideal temperature to maintain watermelon quality ranges from about 13-15 degrees Celsius. In these conditions, the fruit can maintain its freshness for 7-10 days.
A common mistake is that many people cut watermelons and then leave them on the dining table for many hours. According to the food safety guidelines of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), cut watermelons need to be put in the refrigerator within 2 hours to limit bacterial growth. If the ambient temperature is above 32 degrees Celsius, this time is only 1 hour.
Store cut watermelons in sealed containers or wrapped tightly in food wrap. This helps limit moisture loss, while preventing the flesh from absorbing the smell from other foods in the refrigerator, thereby retaining the natural flavor for longer.
Before cutting watermelons, users should wash the skin under running water. Food safety experts warn that bacteria can stick to the skin and penetrate the fruit core with the knife blade when cutting.
For cut watermelons, the best use time is from 3-5 days when stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of about 4 degrees Celsius or lower. If you see a sour, viscous smell, discoloration or abnormal soft areas, you should remove them immediately to avoid health risks.
With just a few simple steps, consumers can keep watermelons fresh longer, limit food waste and ensure safety for the whole family.
