Working baggage on hot sunny days
At 7 am on May 27, a group of workers from workshop No. 4 of the Green Tree Park Joint Stock Company were diligently working along the canopy of the Le Hong Phong road median strip. Ms. Nguyen Minh Thuy (42 years old) said that for the past week, the weather has been continuously hot, and workers going to work have also been more vất vả. Compared to recent years, Ms. Thuy feels that this year's heat wave is much harsher, it's not even 6 am but the sun is already scorching hot, even though it's only the beginning of summer. Also according to Ms. Thuy, workers themselves also equip themselves with necessary items to limit the impact of weather on health such as buying wide-brimmed sun hats, carrying heat-retaining water bottles, air conditioners attached to shirts...
According to Mr. Le Si Hiep (56 years old, factory 4 worker), this year's weather is too hot, just standing for a while, sweat will soak his clothes. In Mr. Hiep's work cart trunk, there are always 2 full bottles of water, towels, and changing jackets. Working hard but with the care and favorable conditions of the company and trade union, Mr. Hiep also feels encouraged. Workers work early, avoiding peak heat. After this morning's shift, Mr. Hiep and Ms. Thuy's group also returned early to participate in the company's health check-up.
In the hot sun of the last day of May, the temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius, workers and laborers of Hai Phong Power Company still made efforts to stick to the grid, ensuring safe and stable operation of the power system to serve the living and production needs of people and businesses in the city.
Sharing the hardships with workers, the Trade Union of Hai Phong Power Company and the Trade Unions of affiliated units organized visits, encouragement and presented drinking water, protective gear, and necessities to officials and employees who are directly working in the field. Thereby, adding motivation for workers to feel secure in their work, overcome hot weather conditions, and successfully complete assigned tasks.
Hai Phong Green Park Joint Stock Company also pays special attention to more than 250 workers who regularly work outdoors. Specifically, to ensure the health of workers, the unit proactively adjusts working hours, avoiding peak hot hours (10:00-15:00 daily). The company also equips hats, scarves, protective clothing with cooling fans; supplements drinking water and milk for workers in special locations.
Faced with the forecast of prolonged heat waves in the coming time, the trade union advises business leaders to organize periodic health check-ups for workers from May 27-29 to detect early health problems, thereby having appropriate job arrangement plans. Along with that, the trade union also strengthens propaganda and guidance for workers to proactively implement health protection measures in the summer.
Timely support for workers
In industrial parks, the Industrial Park Trade Union Board has also advised the Hai Phong City Labor Federation to direct the implementation of measures to ensure occupational safety and health during the hot season. In which, grassroots trade unions proactively propose and coordinate with employers to implement hot weather prevention solutions to ensure workers' health in the summer. In which, improve working conditions by supplementing and maintaining ventilation and cooling systems (air conditioners, fans, misting systems, cooling pads), shielding to reduce heat radiation (heatproof corrugated iron roofs, sunshade nets), painting bright walls, planting green trees, vines to create shade...
Along with that, equip suitable personal protective equipment for workers such as protective clothing made of cool, sweat-absorbing materials; consider equipping specialized cooling jackets (fan-mounted jackets, cooling gel jackets), wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses for high-temperature work positions, direct sun exposure. At the same time, arrange reasonable working and rest hours, adjust the start and end times of working shifts earlier, increase the frequency and break time in the middle of the hour in cool places, arrange heavy work in cool weather during the day.
Units provide sufficient hygienic drinking water and suitable cooling drinks (cool filtered water, lemon salt water, oresol, herbal tea, fresh milk...). In addition, supplement water bottles in convenient locations for workers; increase nutrition and vitamins in shift meals to increase resistance for workers (supplementing fruits, green vegetables)...
