Barriers to find jobs for young workers

Although an important resource for the labor market, young workers are currently facing many difficulties and barriers when applying for jobs.

Not clearly understanding the labor market and yourself

Mr. Hoang Nguyen Duc was a bachelor of Hanoi National Economics University. Graduating in 2011 with an excellent degree, Mr. Duc is confident that he will find a stable job with a good income.

"However, after half a year of applying for a job, employers who have called for interviews all have the same assessment that I "lack practical experience". At that time, I understood that the knowledge I had learned in school was only a part. More importantly, the labor market requires candidates to have "hand-on" experience. There are also businesses that accept retraining for human resources, but this number is not large and candidates will fall into a state of "inferiority" in this labor supply and demand," said Mr. Duc.

According to Mr. Duc, in addition to dreamy knowledge about the labor market, many young workers also have delusions about themselves. He said that he and many friends believe that just graduating with a good degree will easily find a job and "break" the group of workers from college or lower education.

Currently having a stable job at a financial institution, Mr. Duc advises young people to be very practical when going to work. "What you imagine is different from reality. Work hard, learn soft skills and learn from the previous generation, Mr. Duc recommended.

Not having a good starting point like Mr. Duc, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Manh also "disillusioned" even though he only applied to become a worker.

From his hometown of Phu Tho to Hanoi to find a job with the thought of "having a lot of work to do", Mr. Manh wanders around many industrial parks, even applying for a job at private companies with low salaries but has not been accepted. "The reason is that I do not have any experience working in any field," said Mr. Manh.

Finally, thanks to the advice and sponsorship of acquaintances, Mr. Manh applied to study unpaid work at a mechanical workshop. After nearly 1 year of studying, he was hired by this workshop because he had a good grasp of the job.

The labor market has become more complex

Discussing the barriers that young people face when participating in the labor market, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Huong - former Director of the Institute of Social Labor Science analyzed that the main reason why many young people find it difficult to ask for, or even cannot find a job is lack of practical experience.

Many people are just theory students, have never participated in internships; some are not even trained, do not have any professional qualifications. Not to mention, soft skills such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking... are still very limited, said Ms. Huong.

According to Ms. Huong, many young workers lack a clear career orientation, even choosing jobs according to trends or family expectations. This situation occurs in both the group of workers with qualified capacity and the group that has not been trained. "This is waste and it is necessary for the authorities to orient development, avoid creating unnecessary waste, especially in the group with qualifications, who can study well and go to the destination," Ms. Huong emphasized.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Vu Quang Thanh - Deputy Director of Hanoi Employment Service Center said that digital transformation makes the labor market more complex, requiring technological skills and high adaptability. Accordingly, the professional structure is also shifting from simple labor to a high-level technical and professional industry.

"Therefore, workers need to proactively equip themselves with soft skills, the ability to apply technology and the ability to adapt to the digital working environment. The goal of the labor market is not only to catch up with the trend, but also to be associated with the human resource development strategy, said Mr. Vu Quang Thanh.
