Many tragic work accidents
According to statistics from the Hai Phong City Labor Federation, from the beginning of 2024 until now, occupational accidents (OAs) have increased in both the number of cases and the number of deaths compared to the same period. Recently, a serious occupational accident occurred at Factory 2 of Shin Etsu Co., Ltd. (Dinh Vu Industrial Park).
According to the company's declaration, Shin Etsu Company signed a contract with Green Food Catering Services Joint Stock Company to provide industrial meals. At 8:00 p.m. on October 2, after finishing their shift, 4 female kitchen staff of Green Foods Company moved from the kitchen on the 2nd floor to the 1st floor to leave by freight elevator (not allowed to carry people). During the elevator's movement, there was an unexpected incident that caused Ms. N.T.Y. to get stuck, leading to her death. The remaining employees shouted and were rescued safely.
Previously, at Dinh Vu Industrial Park, there was a work accident at Flat Vietnam Co., Ltd. Accordingly, at 4:20 p.m. on September 14, while cleaning up the storm and collecting trash on the roof of the company's processing factory, Mr. T.X.T (born in 1991, a worker at the company) slipped and fell to the ground. Mr. T was taken to Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital for emergency treatment immediately afterwards, but due to severe injuries, he died at 5:45 p.m. the same day.
According to the report of the Hai Phong Economic Zone Trade Union, a serious accident also occurred at DongJin Techwin Vina Co., Ltd. (Trang Due Industrial Park), causing Mr. Nguyen Van De (born in 1987, worker) to have both arms severed. Mr. De has worked at Dongjin Techwin Vina Co., Ltd. for 4 years. On May 23, Mr. De was checking defective products during his shift when he suddenly had an accident that resulted in both arms being broken. Mr. De was given emergency treatment at Viet Duc Hospital (Hanoi), then returned to Viet Tiep Hospital in Hai Phong for treatment. Notably, the images and videos of Mr. De's accident spread on social networks, causing a stir in public opinion. Many people believe that the implementation of occupational safety and health (OSH) procedures at the enterprise was lax, leading to the unfortunate incident.
Strengthening supervision of occupational safety and hygiene
According to statistics from the Hai Phong City Labor Federation, by the end of the third quarter of 2024, there were 12 fatal occupational accidents in the city, killing 12 people (an increase of 6 cases and 5 deaths compared to the same period in 2023). The City Labor Federation has participated with the authorities in investigating to determine the cause and responsibility in accordance with the law to ensure the rights of employees as well as businesses.
To limit occupational safety and health loss, the Hai Phong City Labor Federation organized 35 occupational safety and health training courses for 2,450 people, 5 fire prevention and fighting training courses for nearly 1,000 workers. The Hai Phong Economic Zone Trade Union alone organized 4 occupational safety training courses for 524 union officials. The union organizations proactively organized 218 occupational safety supervisions, focusing on supervising safety implementation at high-risk locations, detecting 655 occupational safety risks and adjusting 67 safety regulations. The movement to self-improve working conditions at the workplace, safety culture and green growth... was promoted, attracting 164,526 workers to participate.
