Apple is said to be preparing a major change with iOS 27 when allowing iPhone users to self-choose an artificial intelligence (AI) model to use on the device. Instead of relying on a single system, users can flexibly choose different AI tools depending on their needs.
According to a report from Bloomberg, this feature has an internal name "Extensions". It allows access to AI models generated from third parties through familiar tools such as Siri, Writing Tools or Image Playground.
This means that AI is no longer limited to Apple's own ecosystem, but can expand to other services.
The source said Apple is currently testing models from Google and Anthropic.
Meanwhile, ChatGPT is already available on iPhones and is likely to continue to be a choice for users.
Not only iOS 27, this feature is also expected to appear on iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, creating a synchronous AI ecosystem on Apple devices.
This approach helps users customize the experience, just like choosing an application, but at the level of artificial intelligence.
The above move takes place in the context that Apple is being assessed as lagging behind in the AI race compared to its competitors.
However, instead of massively investing in AI infrastructure, Apple is pursuing a strategy to utilize existing hardware to bring a direct AI experience on devices.
This change is also associated with the leadership transition period when CEO Tim Cook is expected to leave his position, giving the role of future orientation to John Ternus. AI strategy is therefore considered one of the important priorities in the coming period.
If the plan becomes a reality, iOS 27 could mark Apple's major shift from a closed operating system to a flexible AI platform, where users can decide how "smart" their devices are.
