Walmart, the world's largest retailer, is partnering with Gemini to create a new shopping experience - similar to the collaboration they made with ChatGPT in October 2025.
According to information provided by Walmart, when users use Gemini to ask questions or search, this virtual assistant will automatically suggest suitable products from Walmart and Sam's Club, based on online purchase history and at the user's store.
For users who have linked their Walmart accounts, Gemini can customize offers based on purchase history and allow delivery at the store within three hours, or even within 30 minutes.
Walmart CEO John Furner said this partnership marks a change in the way people shop.
The shift from traditional web or application search to business led by agents represents the next major step forward in the retail industry. We are not only observing this change, but also promoting it," Furner shared.
In recent years, the discovery-based shopping experience on social networking platforms such as TikTok Shop, Instagram Shopping and online shopping services such as Whatnot has changed the traditional digital shopping experience.
Artificial intelligence is reshaping the discovery process in a stronger way.
Although Gemini is still far behind ChatGPT in terms of total users, it is narrowing the gap and even surpassing OpenAI in some other important aspects.
Google has received many criticisms for being slow in the artificial intelligence race. However, they have quickly made strong strides. In October 2025, they launched Gemini 3.
Google's latest chatbot version has received positive reception from both consumers and technology industry leaders.
Gemini also benefits from Google's larger product ecosystem, including Search, Workplace, Android and Google TV.
With Walmart's cooperation, Google has launched a new retail protocol, which they call the Universal Commerce Protocol. According to Google's leaders, this protocol will open up a new open standard for virtual assistants and systems to communicate with each other in every step of the shopping journey.
Previously, OpenAI announced its own commercial protocol, after launching the Instant Checkout feature. This new feature allows users to buy goods directly on ChatGPT from Etsy and more than a million sellers on Shopify, the company said in a blog post announcing this feature.
OpenAI also said that the protocol behind it, Agency Commerce Protocol, is "an open standard for AI commerce that allows AI agents, people and businesses to jointly complete trading transactions".
