According to the Japan Times, this system is expected to create a big step forward in simplifying address entry procedures on online platforms.
With the new system, users only need to enter a 7- character digital code on e-commerce websites or other online services. Immediately, the corresponding real address will automatically be displayed on these pages. This is a solution to shorten the time to fill in information and minimize errors when entering manual addresses.
People can register the digital address code via Yu ID member service of the Japanese Post Office. A notable point is that digital code will not change even when the actual residence address of users changes. In case of transfer, if the user sends a notice of changing the address to the post office, the new address will be automatically linked to the old code.
The Japan Post said it will take about a decade to promote the widespread application of this system nationwide. Meanwhile, some large companies in the e-commerce sector, including Rakuten, are considering applying a new system to improve efficiency and customer experience.
The implementation of digital addresses is seen as part of Japan's efforts to modernize administrative and logistics services, while paving the way for future digital services.
