Amid the wave of debate about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the content creation industry, Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, said that this technology will not destroy creators as many people are concerned, but on the contrary, open a new creative era for many people who have not had the opportunity.
However, he also warned that society must learn to adjust, especially in distinguishing between real and fake online.
Speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference, Mosseri was asked to comment on the recent comments of MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson), the world's most famous YouTuber, when he expressed that the rise of AI video has left the future of the creative industry uncertain.
Mosseri argued that AI does not threaten genuine content creators, but helps them produce faster, cheaper and more creatively.
The Internet once made it possible for anyone to become a publisher, but now AI makes it possible for anyone to become a creator, said Mr. Mosseri, affirming that generative AI models are reducing content production costs to near zero, expanding access and innovation in digital creation.
However, he also admitted the dark side of technology, when bad guys can take advantage of AI to create false information, fake images or harmful content.
Children today are taught that watching videos does not mean it really happened, Mosseri said, adding that he wants his children to learn to question the source of information, the speaker and the motivation behind it, rather than absolutely relying on online images.
On Meta's side, Mosseri said the company is working to identify and label AI-generated content, but admitted that automatic labeling is sometimes deviant, with fake labels.
Mr. Mosseri said that Meta needs to provide more context for viewers to understand more, suggesting that a similar model can be applied to Community Notes, where users can add comments, verify information or clarify the origin of content.
Mosseri stressed that the responsibility belongs not only to the social media platform, but also to the whole society.
We need a generation of users who are capable of critical thinking and know how to ask questions before each video or image is shared, he said.
In addition to the AI theme, the Instagram Director also shared about the future of the platform, including plans to launch its own TV app, along with continuing to focus on developing Reels and Direct messaging (DM), two features that are considered the new pillars of Instagram.
Mosseri also affirmed that competition from TikTok has helped Instagram work better, and said that changing TikTok's ownership in the US will not significantly change the platform.
According to Mosseri, AI is not a threat, but a natural step forward in the content creation process, as long as society promptly learn to adapt and retain the core value of truth in the digital world.
