Google has just released a new report showing that the Android operating system is superior to iOS in fighting mobile fraud.
Accordingly, Android users face fewer scam calls and messages than iPhone users, thanks to protection tools powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
Google's blog post said that AI protection measures have helped the Android system block more than 10 billion malicious calls and messages per month, contributing to preventing estimated losses of up to $400 billion per year from mobile fraud globally.
YouGov survey data with 5,000 smartphone users shows a significant gap between Android and iOS.
Android users are 58% more likely to not receive scam messages last week than iPhone users.
In particular, Pixel users recorded this rate of up to 96%. In contrast, iPhone users are 65% more likely to receive three or more scam messages in a week, and 150% of users believe their devices are ineffective in preventing fraud.
Google highlights its advantage thanks to built-in tools, including thu filter in messages, fraud detection on devices and call screens in phone applications.
These features help identify and block suspicious calls before users respond, enhancing the default defense capabilities without the need to install additional third-party apps.
In addition to internal data, Google also cited research from Counterpoint Research and Leviathan Security Group.
Counterpoint found that Android has AI protections in nine security areas, compared to just two on iOS.
Leviathan concludes that Android phones, especially Google Pixel, provide stronger anti-fraud default protection, affirming Android's position in the security field.
This report challenges Apple's longstanding reputation for security and privacy.
While Apple has only added the "Unidentified calling lookup" feature, Google believes that multi-layered AI protection on Android brings the advantage of automatic identification and blocking emerging fraud techniques.
