Google has just adjusted the application testing regulations on Google Play, bringing more convenience to independent application developers.
According to the latest update on Google Play's support page, developers using personal accounts created after November 13, 2023, now only need to test their apps with a minimum of 12 people within 14 days. Previously, the requirement was 20 testers within the same period.
This change, though small, could open up greater opportunities for independent developers to bring their apps to Google Play. Many developers work alone, relying on friends or family to test their apps.
The requirement of 20 testers has been a major hurdle, forcing developers to look for additional testers on platforms like X (Twitter) or Reddit. This not only slows down the app launch process, but can even cause some developers to abandon the idea of releasing their apps on Google Play.
Previously, the idea of 20 testers was to ensure that the app was thoroughly tested before being released to the public. But that number of testers was considered too high. Reducing the requirement to 12 people will make it easier for developers to meet, especially those who are just starting out or do not have large resources.
Google notes that the new rules do not apply to business accounts. The requirements for creating a business account on Google Play were already higher than before, with more complicated processes. This reduces the likelihood that the released app is malware.
On a platform as large as Google Play, policies don't always please everyone. However, adjustments like this show that Google is listening to feedback and trying to strike a balance between ensuring app quality and supporting the developer community.
