According to France24, the case began in November 2023, when the police in the Castile and Leon region received a report of a man's disappearance.
After investigation, on November 12, police arrested the victim's girlfriend and another man, identified as her ex-boyfriend, in Soria province (Spain).
During a search of the suspects' homes and vehicles, police unexpectedly found an important clue from "an image in a location app." According to the announcement, investigators discovered an image of a vehicle that may have been used in the murder using Google Maps.
Spanish media then circulated screenshots from Google Maps Street View in October 2024. The images showed a person stuffing a covered object into the trunk of a car in the village of Tajueco, Soria province. While not conclusive, these images played an important role in solving the case.
Miguel Latorre, the government representative in Soria, told public broadcaster RTVE that the person in the image "can be considered the perpetrator".
Spanish police also said this month they found a badly decomposed torso in a cemetery in the province of Soria, believed to be that of the victim. The newspaper El Pais reported that the victim was a 33-year-old Cuban man.
The two suspects are currently in custody on a judge's order, while the investigation continues.
