Simple and compact, that is what users have loved in Microsoft Lens - a document scanning application on mobile. But according to the new announcement, Lens will officially be "decommissioned" to make way for the Microsoft Copilot AI application.
According to the support document just released, Lens will stop working on iOS and Android from September 15, 2025, and will be removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play on November 15, 2025. Current users can still use the scanning feature until December 15, 2025, after which they will not be able to scan again, but can still access old scans if the application is still on the device.
Launched in 2015 as Office Lens, the app was originally for Windows Phone, then expanded to other platforms. Unlike many document scanning applications today, Lens does not limit the feature to selling paid packages, but allows users to convert handwritten notes, documents, invoices, business cards or whiteboard images to PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel or photo formats.
The application also integrates a lighting filter, increased sharpness, black and white transition and many other options. The file scanning can be saved to OneNote, other Microsoft applications, online storage services, or directly to the photo library.
Lens users will be ported to Microsoft 365 Copilot. Although Copilot can scan documents, this application lacks many features that make Lens attractive, such as save directly to OneNote, Word, PowerPoint, save business cards to OneNote, ...
