Cyber security threats related to video games in Southeast Asia increase sharply

NGUYỄN ĐĂNG |

Cyber security threats related to video games in Southeast Asia increased sharply by 86% in the second half of 2025. This poses many challenges in 2026.

According to the latest data from Kaspersky - a global company in the field of cybersecurity and digital security, Southeast Asia (SEA) recorded a sharp increase of 86% in the number of cybersecurity threats related to video games detected on user devices from the first half of 2025 to the second half of 2025.

Notably, Vietnam and Thailand recorded the strongest increases, at 202.5% and 104.4% respectively. Singapore (22.1%) and Malaysia (21.3%) also witnessed significant increases. Although Indonesia is outside the general growth trend of the region, experts warn that the risks from cyber security threats related to electronic games in this country are still high and contain many unpredictable risks.

Among these threats, the most targeted games can be mentioned such as Minecraft and Roblox. The main reason comes from the flexible customization capabilities of these games, inadvertently becoming an ideal attack point for cybercriminals.

Not only stopping at direct victims, these cyber attacks can also cause widespread consequences to the whole family. The reason is lack of vigilance, young players may unintentionally reveal sensitive data such as credit card information of parents or home addresses to bad guys.

This data can then be exploited by hackers for financial gain or to facilitate further illegal activities, typically staging fraudulent attacks through psychological manipulation targeting relatives. In addition, malware or risky applications accidentally downloaded to shared devices in the family can also infringe on the privacy and data of all other members.

To protect family online interactions, cybersecurity experts recommend:

- Do not install applications from unreliable sources or click on links from strange sources.

- Check the links carefully before clicking. Only access the links you believe are safe.

- Scan malware periodically. Personal devices should be protected with reputable antivirus solutions.

- For parents, start early cybersecurity education for children, provide information about new technologies, basic cybersecurity hygiene rules, as well as tips to recognize and avoid online threats.

- Guide children on how to set a password that is strong enough and unique, and change it periodically to enhance security.

- Install reliable security solutions on your child's device to prevent downloading malicious files and accessing suspicious websites.

- Use applications to support child management in the digital environment to help children form healthy Internet use habits, protect children from inappropriate content and balance device usage time.
