The independent game distribution platform Itch.io has just surprised many developers when it quietly implemented a new policy to control games with adult content. Accordingly, a series of games with sensitive elements have been hidden from search engines on the platform, making it almost impossible for users to find without a direct link.
Users discovered these changes earlier in the week and Itch.io also confirmed the adjustment in its adult game display policy. According to the platform representative, this is part of an effort to improve the user experience and ensure appropriate content is introduced publicly.
Itch.io has long been famous as a gathering place for small game developers, with an open and low-zensorship philosophy. This is one of the very few platforms that allows posting games with obvious sex elements without imposing strict censorship. However, this new move is raising concerns that the platform will gradually move towards strict control like Steam, Meta or many other major app markets.
On forums and social networks, many developers were disappointed, saying that Itch.io's actions go against the creative freedom spirit that the platform once pursued. Some have accused Itch.io of being non-transparent by not officially announcing the change.
It is not yet clear whether this is just an experimental step or a long-term policy. However, as gaming platforms are tightening adult content, the change of Itch.io could be a sign that the free space for adult games is gradually narrowing.
