Finding comprehensive strength
Sports expert Nguyen Hong Minh (former Director of the Department of High Performance Sports 1, General Department of Physical Education and Sports) discussed: "Up to now, we do not miss the task of attending the SEA Games because the role in contributing to the overall development of the Southeast Asian sports community is of great significance.
However, since Vietnamese sports set a goal of striving for a Gold Medal, we have achieved many championship achievements and are in the top 3 positions.
Vietnamese sports need to focus more on developing key sports and events to develop beyond Southeast Asia.
With the SEA Games, we have many memorable milestones. In 1989, Vietnamese sports won the first Gold Medal in this arena to integrate into international sports.
In 2003, Vietnam organized the SEA Games at home for the first time and held the No. 1 position on the total medal table for the first time (158 Gold Medals, 97 Silver Medals, 91 Bronze Medals).
In 2022, we will be the host of the SEA Games for the second time and achieve the No. 1 goal for the whole delegation in terms of medal results.
At the 32nd SEA Games held in Cambodia in 2023, for the first time, Vietnam won the No. 1 position when attending an Games held outside of Vietnam (136 Gold Medals, 105 Silver Medals, 114 Bronze Medals).
The goal of Vietnamese sports for the 33rd SEA Games is to strive to be in the top 3 countries with the result of winning from 80 to 100 Gold Medals.
"The Gold Medal results are an appreciated effort of the athletes. However, many experts always expect us to achieve the best results in the Olympic and Olympic events competed in at the SEA Games, Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh added.
Location in the Asian arena
On July 23, the Department of Physical Education and Sports worked with the professional department to review the force and expected us to send 971 members to participate in the 33rd SEA Games.
In particular, the sports group must have the task of winning Gold Medals including athletics, shooting, weightlifting, swimming, gymnastics, football, physical education, taekwondo, sword fighting, canoe racing, traditional boat racing, rowing, cloud bridge racing, karate, boxing, judo, jujitsu, iron ball, wushu, muay, bicycle, flag, archery, pencak silat, table tennis, aerobics, triathlon, volleyball, golf, volleyball, basketball (3x3) events.
Vietnamese sports are in the top 2 countries with the best results at the SEA Games in terms of the total results of medals at 3 consecutive SEA Games 30, 31 and 32.
However, in the arena outside of Southeast Asia, Vietnamese sports do not have a high ranking in Asia and the world arena. In fact, Vietnamese sports only have a modest goal of striving to win 5 Gold Medals at the Asian Games (ASIAD).
At the 19th ASIAD held in China in 2023, we sent the most elite force to ever achieve the highest results at the 32nd SEA Games (taking place in the same year 2023) but Vietnamese sports only won 3 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals, 19 Bronze Medals and ranked 21st in Asia.
Meanwhile, the sports of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines have been below us in the results of the 32nd SEA Games but have surpassed Vietnamese sports in the 19th ASIAD.
Former Deputy Director General of the General Department of Physical Education and Sports Tran Duc Phan previously analyzed: "To win an ASIAD Gold Medal is very difficult, so we have to calculate and invest carefully from the content to the key event".
