This move is part of a larger effort to strengthen OpenAI's position in business and infrastructure development in one of their fastest growing markets.
Accordingly, the cooperation between OpenAI and Tata Group is part of the Stargate project, aimed at building infrastructure ready for AI (artificial intelligence) and expanding its application in businesses globally. OpenAI will become the first customer of the HyperVault data center segment of Tata Consultancy Services, starting with a capacity of 100 megawatts.
This agreement also includes the deployment of ChatGPT Enterprise for all Tata employees and standardizing the AI-based software development process through OpenAI tools.
This partnership, within the framework of the “OpenAI for India” initiative, emphasizes the expansion of the company's influence in this country, where, according to recent estimates by CEO Sam Altman, there are more than 100 million monthly ChatGPT users, including students, teachers, developers and entrepreneurs.
The scale of this application has made India one of OpenAI's most important growth markets as the company increases investment in businesses and infrastructure in this country.
Domestic data center capacity will allow OpenAI to operate its most advanced models right in India, reducing latency for users, while meeting requirements for data storage, security and compliance with regulations for managed areas and the volume of government work.
The initial capacity of 100 megawatts demonstrates a significant commitment in the context of AI infrastructure, where large-scale model training and inference require graphics processing clusters (GPUs) to consume a lot of power. Expanding to 1 gigawatt over time will make Tata's facility one of the largest AI-focused data centers globally, highlighting OpenAI's long-term ambition scale in India.
In addition to infrastructure, OpenAI and Tata Group will pursue business-level strategic cooperation to accelerate the application of AI in Tata's entire business fields.
This group plans to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise for all employees in the coming years, starting with hundreds of thousands of employees at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), this will be one of the largest enterprise-level AI deployments globally. TCS also plans to use OpenAI's Codex tools to standardize AI-based software development in its engineering teams.
OpenAI plans to open more offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, after being present in New Delhi. This expansion is expected to support business partnerships, the participation of developers and coordination with local regulators as the company expands its operations in India.
In addition, OpenAI is expanding its presence in India through partnerships with companies including Pine Labs, JioHotstar, Eternal, Cars24, HCLTech, PhonePe, CRED and MakeMyTrip, with the aim of integrating its models into consumer platforms, business systems and digital payment infrastructure in one of the world's largest internet markets.
