OpenAI reshuffles leadership at a critical time
OpenAI is entering an important leadership restructuring phase as many senior positions have undergone notable changes. This move comes as the company intensifies competition with major rivals such as Anthropic and Google in the field of artificial intelligence.
Accordingly, Chief Operating Officer (COO) Brad Lightcap is assigned a new role, focusing on special projects. His tasks include promoting the business of AI products for businesses, including cooperation with private investment funds. He will report directly to CEO Sam Altman.
Along with that, Denise Dresser - the newly appointed Revenue Director will take over part of Lightcap's previous operations, to ensure that the company's operations are not interrupted during the transition period.
Another notable development is that Ms. Fidji Simo - head of General Artificial Intelligence (AGI) development at OpenAI will take a few weeks off for treatment.
Joining OpenAI from May 2025, Ms. Simo plays an important role in shaping product strategies, especially commercial initiatives such as advertising experiments in ChatGPT.
In an internal message, she said the hiatus took place at an unwanted time, when the company was implementing many important plans. However, she expressed confidence in the current leadership team.
Although it is only a temporary absence, this still poses a challenge for OpenAI as the company is in the stage of accelerating product development and market expansion.
Personnel changes occurred along with the process of adjusting OpenAI's strategy. Recently, the company decided to stop some projects such as the AI video creation application Sora and related products, in order to focus resources on key directions.
Some other features in ChatGPT, including instant payments, have also been suspended indefinitely.
Currently, OpenAI is said to be aiming to develop a "super application" integrating many tools such as ChatGPT chatbot, Codex programming platform and Atlas web browser.
The goal is to create a unified AI ecosystem, serving both individual users and businesses.
Preparing for greater ambition
In addition to internal restructuring, OpenAI is also preparing for important financial steps, including the possibility of initial public offering (IPO).
The company is said to have just mobilized a large source of capital with valuations of up to hundreds of billions of USD, showing investor confidence in the growth potential of the AI sector.
During Ms. Simo's absence, co-founder Greg Brockman will temporarily be in charge of the product segment, with support from other senior leaders such as Strategic Director Jason Kwon, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar and Denise Dresser.
OpenAI is also looking for a new Marketing Director (CMO) after Ms. Kate Rouch left her position for treatment, with the possibility of returning to work in the future in a scope suitable for her health.
Representatives of OpenAI said that the company still maintains a strong leadership team, focusing on strategic priorities such as developing advanced AI technology, expanding global user scale and promoting applications in the business.
