OpenAI has just attracted attention when announcing the acquisition of the famous technology talk show Technology Business Programming Network (TBPN), marking the first time this artificial intelligence company has acquired a media platform.
TBPN is a daily live broadcast program lasting about three hours on YouTube and X, hosted by two technology founders John Coogan and Jordi Hays.
The program's content revolves around hot topics such as technology, business, artificial intelligence and defense, attracting a large audience in Silicon Valley.
Thanks to its frank discussion style, TBPN is likened to a "SportsCenter of the technology industry", where top leaders such as Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, Marc Benioff or Sam Altman regularly appear to share views, respond to news and sometimes reveal important information.
After the deal, TBPN will still operate as an independent brand, and also receive scale expansion support from OpenAI.
According to estimates by international press, this program is on track to achieve revenue of more than 30 million USD this year.
The acquisition of TBPN is part of OpenAI's long-term strategy to better control how AI technology is communicated and reaches the public.
Fidji Simo - head of AGI deployment at OpenAI said the company wants to take advantage of TBPN's communication and community building capabilities to "help people understand the impact of AI on life.
Notably, TBPN will have autonomy in content, including guest selection and editing orientation. However, the program will be under the strategic coordination of Chris Lehane, a person with a lot of experience in the field of media and politics in the US.
However, this deal also sparked debate. OpenAI is currently one of the high-value AI companies and is aiming for an IPO, while TBPN is a regular forum for discussion, even criticizing OpenAI itself and its competitors.
The fact that a technology company controls an influential media channel raises many questions about independence and transparency.
On OpenAI's side, CEO Sam Altman affirmed that the deal will not change TBPN's critical spirit. He even suggested that the program should continue to criticize the company when necessary, considering it a factor to help OpenAI improve.
Meanwhile, TBPN representatives see this as an opportunity to shift from the role of commentator to creating practical impact. According to Jordi Hays, co-founder of TBPN, cooperation with OpenAI helps them contribute to shaping how AI technology is understood and deployed globally.
