Global market research firm IDC has just announced smartphone sales in the Indian market in the first 6 months of 2025. According to IDC, a total of 70 million smartphones were shipped in India from January to June 2025, up 0.9% over the same period.
In the second quarter of this year, the Indian smartphone market recorded a growth of 7.3% over the same period last year, with 37 million units shipped.
Apple has maintained strong performance with shipments increasing by 21.5% over the same period last year, reaching 5.9 million units in the first half of 2025. iPhone 16 is the most shipped phone model across India in the first half of 2025, accounting for 4% of total shipments in India in the same period.
However, in terms of overall market share, Apple is only 7th in India with 7.5%. They are behind Vivo, Samsung, Oppo, Realme, Xiaomi and Motorola.
"The second quarter of 2025 will witness the launch of a series of new models in all price segments. This, along with falling prices of older models, increasing online sales profit margins and strong market marketing efforts (ATLs), has boosted overall market growth, said Aditya Rampal, senior research analyst, devices Research, IDC Asia - Pacific.
In the high-end segment (smartphones priced from $600 to under $800), Apple is at the top with the iPhone 16 and 15 series accounting for 60% of the factory sales. This is also the segment with the highest growth rate of 96.4%, with the market share increasing from 2% to 4% over the same period last year.
However, in the high-end segment (smartphones priced from $800 and above), Samsung defeated Apple to take the lead with market share of 49% and 48%, respectively. iPhone 16, Samsung Galaxy S25, S24 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy S25 and iPhone 16Plus are key server models in this segment.
In the low-cost and affordable segments (priced from $100 to under $400), accounting for 42% and 27%, respectively, Apple is not involved. Instead, Vivo continues to be the company that sells the most smartphones in India at prices below 400 USD, followed by Oppo and Samsung.
This explains Vivo's dominance of the general market, as well as Apple's only 7th place in the list of leading smartphone suppliers in India.
