This music platform cooperates with identified technology company Yoti - a unit that is also providing services to Instagram to apply the age-based facial scanning process.
Currently, Spotify users in the UK can be asked to take this verification step when trying to listen to or watch age-restricted content. If the system determines the correct age based on facial photos, users can choose to verify by identification documents.
In addition to limiting sensitive content, Spotify can also use the verification results to disable accounts if users are under the age of the minimum. In the UK, users must be 13 years old or older to be eligible to use Spotify. If you cant verify that youre old enough to use Spotify, your account will be disabled and then permanently deleted, the company warned.
This move comes as the UK's Online Safety Act begins to take effect, forcing many platforms such as Reddit, Bluesky, Microsoft/Xbox and adult content providers to deploy forms of age verification.
