According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg's announcement on the Threads platform itself, the company is starting to pilot inbox specifically for Threads, first in some countries.
Threads has had the feature of sharing posts via text messages since last year, but only allows sending Threads posts to friends via Instagram inbox.
This is inconvenient because users have to switch between the two applications. At the same time, it also causes confusion when users can post to contacts on Instagram even though they do not use Threads, leading to a situation where recipients cannot view the content.
Its no surprise that direct messaging is the most requested feature for Threads users. However, Meta's leaders, especially Instagram director Adam Mosseri, are cautious.
Last year, Mosseri said he wanted to "make Instagram mailing boxes work better for Threads" instead of developing its own messaging system.
However, this is changing. Meta is starting to pilot its own inbox on Threads. For now, the new feature only supports 1:1 conversations and is still much more limited than the messaging system on Instagram or X ( Twitter). Meta said it will soon expand the trial to many other regions.
