UGC is a potential new trend for the Vietnamese gaming industry

NGUYỄN ĐĂNG |

More than 600 Vietnamese developers participate in building games on Roblox, generating high revenue in 2024, opening an attractive direction for the Vietnamese gaming industry.

The trend of content creation to game development

UGC - user Generated content (user-generated content) is very familiar on YouTube or TikTok, changing the gaming industry rapidly. Like the above platforms, users can design their own virtual worlds, build games and make money from their own creations.

According to market research firm Statista, the global UGC gaming market will reach 14.2 billion USD in 2024, with the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region growing by 30%. Vietnam, with its young and technology-loving population, is becoming a bright spot in this wave.

A survey by the world-famous gaming website Newzoo shows that 65% of Vietnamese gamers under the age of 25 are interested in or have tried to create game content.

As long as you have the passion and the right tools, young people can start their game development journey without a large team or a huge budget. They can completely create global products from their own small rooms, Duong Chi Tam - Roblox Product Director shared at Game Talks, an activity within the framework of Vietnam Game Verse (Vietnam Game Festival) in 2025.

A playground with great potential for Vietnamese game developers

Roblox is currently the world's leading UGC platform with about 85-90 million active daily users and more than 380 million monthly active accounts globally, mainly Gen Z and Gen Alpha. This trend is creating a fever in Vietnam.

In just over the past year, the number of Roblox users in Vietnam has increased by 28%, mainly those under 24 years old. With friendly, easy-to-use tools that do not require complex programming skills, players can build their own adventure games, simulations to unique virtual events.

According to data from VNGGames, the exclusive release partner Roblox in Vietnam, in 2024, more than 600 Vietnamese developers participated in building games on Roblox, generating millions of USD in revenue.

In addition to Roblox, Fortnite Creative is also a prominent UGC platform. Launched in 2018, this mode allows players to build maps and create their own games in Fortnite's own engine. In particular, from 2023, the Creator Economy 2.0 program will allow content creators to receive up to 40% of Fortnite's revenue, opening up real economic opportunities for the global development community.

Challenges and the future of UGC in Vietnam

Despite the great potential, the path to UGC innovation is not easy. Many young people face technical barriers, social prejudices about "playing games", or difficulties in maintaining their passion when the product is not well received.

Although it is only in the "water egg" stage, UGC in the game is expected to be one of the new growth drivers of the Vietnamese gaming industry.

With the support of domestic game businesses, along with the unlimited creativity of the younger generation, the trend of "players becoming developers" is opening a new era, where anyone can create potential virtual worlds, conquering the international market.
