The system will be tested in the coming weeks with a group of users in the US, before expanding to other markets.
The AI tool will analyze user behavior such as the type of video being searched for, the category of videos commonly viewed, and the duration of the account to determine if the user is a teenager. If the account evaluation system belongs to this group, YouTube will automatically turn off personalized ads, activate mental health support tools and add appropriate protections.
Since launching a supervised account for teenagers in 2021, YouTube has continuously strengthened protection layers for young users. The company said that AI recognition technology has been applied in a number of other markets and has brought positive results.
YouTube is not the only platform using AI to determine the real age of users. However, unlike Meta - a company that allows users to adjust settings themselves if they are misidentified, YouTube requires users to re-verify their age using a credit card or identification documents if the system rates them as under 18 years old.
