YouTube now supports the option to play videos at 2x speed, helping users shorten the time to watch long content. Recently, the platform continued to test 4x speed, allowing videos to play four times faster than normal.
According to information from The Verge, this feature is being tested on the YouTube app for Android and iOS, but only applies to YouTube Premium users.
Unlike the previous tap-and-hold action to speed up 2x, 4x speed will need to be adjusted directly in the playback settings. When you go to “Playback speed,” you’ll see this new option next to the familiar speed levels, which range from 0.25x to 2x.
4x speed up significantly reduces viewing time, especially useful when skimming through long content like tutorial videos.

However, due to the speed being too fast, the voice in the video can become harder to hear and understand.
One user humorously commented on YouTube's move, saying: "Now I can watch videos like I'm running out of time in Super Mario."
In the Super Mario game, when time is running out, the background music speeds up, creating a sense of urgency and tension. Watching the video at 4x speed makes everything happen quickly, like Mario rushing to complete the level before time runs out.
