Advantages and disadvantages of eating papaya with seeds
Ms. Jinal Patel - nutritionist at Zynova Shalby Hospital (Mumbai, India) - said that papaya contains many antioxidants, vitamins and enzymes that aid digestion, enhance immunity and improve skin health.
It also contains powerful nutrients like vitamin C, A and folate, which aid in protein digestion and is also known to reduce inflammation in the body.
Nutritionist Patel emphasizes that regular consumption in appropriate levels can improve heart health, digestion and boost the immune system.
“From supporting eye health to potentially reducing the risk of cancer, papaya is truly nourishing to the body, but eating papaya seeds can cause digestive upset with symptoms like stomach pain, discomfort and bloating,” says Jinal Patel.
Meanwhile, Dr. Shobha Gupta, Medical Director, Gynecologist and IVF Specialist at Mother's Lap IVF Center New Delhi & Vrindavan (India) explains that eating papaya with seeds also has some benefits, especially for women's health.
Papaya seeds are rich in enzymes, antioxidants, and healthy fats. They may improve liver function and exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. However, the effects may vary from person to person.
Note for pregnant women
Dr Gupta also advises that ripe papaya can help regulate the menstrual cycle due to its ability to stimulate uterine contractions. However, pregnant women should avoid eating green papaya and its seeds.
Because ingredients such as papain, chymopapain and endopeptidases in green papaya latex can stimulate uterine contractions, increase the risk of premature birth or miscarriage and cause pregnancy complications.
