Understanding curd
Curd is a milk-based food that is usually slightly sour in taste and has a thick, jelly-like texture, says clinical nutritionist Garima Goyal in Ludhiana, India.
Curds are created when milk is fermented by bacteria (mainly lactic acid bacteria), which turns the milk from a liquid state to a thicker state, while also giving it a sour taste. This process occurs when a yeast or bacteria is added to the milk, causing the milk to curdle.
Curd is rich in probiotics, vitamins and minerals, which help improve gut health, boost immunity and provide essential nutrients like calcium and protein.
Benefits of eating curd on an empty stomach
Rich in probiotics: Curd is a natural source of probiotics, which are live bacteria that promote gut health by improving digestion and balancing gut flora.
“Eating curd on an empty stomach helps the digestive system function properly by providing beneficial bacteria. Probiotics also enhance nutrient absorption, reduce bloating and aid regular bowel movements,” explains nutritionist Goyal.
Good source of nutrition: Eating curd as soon as you wake up in the morning ensures a quick supply of essential nutrients like calcium, protein and vitamin B. These nutrients provide energy and aid in bone health and muscle recovery.
Hydration and cooling: Curd has a high water content, which helps keep the body hydrated, especially in hot weather. Its natural cooling properties can also reduce body temperature and prevent dehydration.
Potential side effects of eating curd on an empty stomach
Acid Risk: For some people, eating curd on an empty stomach can increase acidity. Especially those with sensitive stomachs or prone to acid reflux.
The lactic acid in curd combined with an empty stomach can lead to discomfort or bloating.
Interaction with stomach acid: When eaten on an empty stomach, the acidic environment in the stomach can eliminate some of the beneficial bacteria in curd, reducing the benefits of probiotics.
To prevent this condition, nutritionist Garima Goyal suggests that combining curd with carbohydrates like oats or fruits can be a good option.
Not ideal for people sensitive to cold weather: Curd is naturally cooling and may not be suitable for people prone to respiratory problems, colds or sinus problems, especially when consumed early in the morning on an empty stomach.
