When the rainy and flood season comes, some villages and residential areas are cut off and have prolonged power outages. Therefore, preserving food becomes one of the survival issues.
First of all, before the flood rises and floods into the house, families need to bring food and drinking water to the highest positions in the house or store them in plastic barrels and waterproof bags.
A closed refrigerator can keep cold for about 4 hours, while a freezer full of food can keep cold for 24 to 48 hours without opening the door. Therefore, it is necessary to limit opening the refrigerator to keep the air cold.
Opening cabinet doors continuously not only drains cold quickly, but also causes bacteria to multiply strongly on meat, fish and dairy products.

To extend the maintenance time, families should also proactively insert bags of dry ice, gel ice or ice water bottles into the refrigerator and freezer.
Along with that, if there are still fresh foods in the house, it is necessary to pre-process and process them immediately. Cook them thoroughly to prolong the storage time at room temperature for a short time before they spoil.
To avoid dependence on electricity and refrigerators, using dry food and canned food is also an easy way to do. Families should stock up on rice, instant noodles, vermicelli, dried fish, pork floss or closed canned foods - foods that do not need refrigeration equipment.
Mr. Chu Hong Nhat - a resident of Dong Kinh ward, Lang Son province - shared: "Currently, many wards in Lang Son are deeply flooded, and the rain has not stopped. From yesterday morning, I went to buy a box of instant noodles along with some canned food and clean water to store. Those are necessary things, which can help my family take care of themselves if they are isolated for many days to come.

For drinking water, families should fill all covered containers with clean water when they see floods rising, houses likely to be isolated, and before the water plant stops supplying electricity.
Along with that, when using, it is necessary to boil it completely to drink directly or prepare food, absolutely avoid using dirty water to wash food utensils.
During the rainy and flood season, the water level of rivers and streams rises, and many places are frequently flooded. Therefore, proper preservation of food, foodstuffs and drinking water will be the key for families to overcome difficult times when they are isolated and have prolonged power outages.
