Checking causes and improving drainage capacity
Tony O'Neill - a gardening expert and founder of Simplify Gardening in the UK - said that the first step is to identify the area with the longest water stagnation and assess the level of flooding.
He recommends that homeowners check for signs of poor drainage such as water stagnation on the grass, sticky soil, or odorless grass roots. Sewers and water pipes around the house also need to be checked to prevent water from flowing back into the yard.
One of the most effective solutions is airing the soil. According to Tony O'Neill, using hole-creating tools on the ground helps air, water and nutrients circulate better, thereby improving the natural drainage capacity of the lawn.
After aeration, gardeners can add a thin layer of sand or organic fertilizer to improve the soil structure over time. For areas heavily flooded for a long time, experts recommend installing an underground drainage system to drain excess water out of the yard.
Adjust grass care to avoid repeated waterlogging
Scott McLeod - landscape expert and owner of McLeod Landscaping in Canada - believes that many people unintentionally make lawns more seriously flooded due to watering too often.
Experts recommend deep watering but extending the time between watering times for grass roots to grow healthier. In addition, you should not cut grass too short because a moderately long grass layer will help keep the soil structure stable and limit water evaporation.
Another solution is to adjust the slope of the garden. Low-lying areas should be filled with more soil to create a slight inclination, helping water naturally drain out of the lawn.
Tony O'Neill also advises growers to choose weeds that are well-tolerant to waterlogging such as high fescue grass or perennial barley. These are grasses with strong roots that adapt well to prolonged humid conditions.
According to experts, just improving the drainage system and changing to appropriate care methods, the lawn can recover significantly after a few weeks and maintain a healthy green color even during the rainy season.
