After a period of contact, the couple developed feelings for each other. However, at that time, she said that love for students was considered an offend and their relationship was kept secret.
In 1946, the couple's love was interrupted by the war. While Mr. Nam had to return to Nghe An to do politics and take care of his family, Ms. Xuan Phuong had to enter the Viet Bac battlefield. After many years of losing contact, Ms. Xuan Phuong was "difficult" when hearing the news that Mr. Nam was getting married from a classmate.
Ms. Xuan Phuong recalled: At that time, I made explosives under the authority of Mr. Tran Dai Nghia. One day, I met my old classmate. During the conversation, he told me that Nam was married. Hearing that news, I was stunned and my limbs were stiff. Mr. Hoang helped me get up, but for the next three months, I couldn't say a word".
After being sad because of her first love for marriage, Ms. Xuan Phuong accepted a 3-second proposal from Mr. Hoang - an employee of the same war zone. She humorously recalled: "Mr. Hoang came and said that he loved me and wanted to build a family with me.
In the harsh war situation, I was so miserable and lonely. I agreed to his proposal for only three seconds. I think Mr. Hoang is the right person, he will not lie to me like Mr. Nam".
Not long after the wedding day, Ms. Xuan Phuong could not hold back her tears when her first love came to the war zone of Tuyen Quang to find her. She said that at that time, she opened the door tremblingly because she saw the guy that year was thin and black and wondered: "Phuong, why are you getting married?". I couldn't say anything. After that, everything went wrong when we learned that "an old classmate of ours had lied to Nam about getting married...", Ms. Xuan Phuong said.
