Before 1975, the two lived in two different places, Mr. Hung in Da Nang, and Mrs. Van in Da Lat. After 1975, the two returned to Binh Thuan and met for the first time in 1976, when they both participated in irrigation work at the construction site.
Mrs. Van recounted that at that time, Mr. Hung kept bumping into her every time they were carrying dirt to build the dike. Mr. Hung shared that at that time, because he was still in his teens, he was still shy, only daring to use indirect methods to slowly approach Mrs. Van. After the "accidental" collisions, Mr. Hung began sending her books and novels, the two even copied music and exchanged messages.
After a year of intimacy and nurturing their relationship, Mr. Hung finally decided to express his love to his wife through a letter. The letter was sent to her in August 1977, opening a romantic love that lasted nearly half a century.
After getting to know each other, the two got married. On the wedding day, Mrs. Van said she had to wear a wedding dress and walk 2-3 kilometers. The dirt road was very difficult to move, and she also wore very high heels. However, everything went smoothly and beautifully.
After the wedding, in the 1980s, life in the new economic era was still difficult, all of the couple's income came from farming such as growing corn and rice.
However, things really get difficult when the children grow up and grandparents have to face being apart to take care of their children going to school in the city.
Mr. Hung stayed behind to work for a living, while Mrs. Van followed the children to take care of them, making sure they focused on their studies and did not go out. In her free time, she worked as a sales assistant selling bedding to earn extra income. Both of them sacrificed a lot to ensure their children's future. After a period of living apart, in two different places, the couple decided to move to the city.
After moving to the city, the couple's lives were turned upside down. Mr. Hung had to do all kinds of jobs, from factory security to construction worker, to take care of his family.
In addition to taking care of her children, Mrs. Van also took on the burden of selling sticky rice and doing hourly chores for companies to help her husband. Later, Mrs. Van went to cook for a pharmaceutical office.
Sometimes Mr. Hung gets angry or the couple argues. However, Mr. Hung said that these are just small things and the conflicts are somewhat funny.
But in general, they still get along well, Mrs. Van always tries to comfort her husband whenever he is not happy.
It was thanks to their trust and love for each other that they overcame difficult times. Mrs. Van shared: "Since we met, it has been a bond that has bound us together." The two always encourage and support each other in all circumstances, just thanks to those simple things that they have come together to this day.
At the age of 70, when the children were grown, the couple allowed themselves to rest. Occasionally on weekends, he took her out for a drive. He humorously recounted that during the trip, the couple sometimes argued when she sat in the back of the car but kept reminding him how to drive.
Looking back on their nearly 50-year journey together, Mr. Hung and Mrs. Van both clearly feel the luck of having each other in their lives. Mr. Hung emotionally said: "Thank you for coming to me. We will hold hands and walk this journey together." Mrs. Van expressed her gratitude for him always being by her side and taking care of her family.
