According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Minh (Society expert, lecturer at the Institute of Journalism and Communication, Academy of Journalism and Propaganda), the most important thing when realizing that you are being psychologically manipulated is to dare to face the truth and actively seek support.
Admitting you are being manipulated
The first and most important step is to accept that you are in a toxic relationship. Although this may be painful because you once placed trust and affection in the other person, this is the premise to begin the process of escaping manipulation.
Share with trusted people
Be brave to share what the victim is going through with a close friend or family member to receive spiritual support and an objective perspective.
Record manipulation behaviors
Practice recording specific events, times, and emotions of yourself/the victim. This helps strengthen awareness and can provide evidence if outside help is needed.
Learn about psychological manipulation
Proactively read books, documents or reputable sources of information to understand the signs and tricks of manipulators as well as how to protect yourself.
Prioritize your own safety
If your safety is threatened, seek immediate help from relatives, friends, or authorities.
