Drinking water can help relieve menstrual cramps by addressing some of the factors that aggravate menstrual pain, says gynaecologist Dr Pratibha Singhal.
A study published in the journal BMC Women’s Health found that drinking water during your period can help reduce pain and discomfort. Here are some reasons why drinking water can help relieve menstrual cramps:
- Prevent cramps due to dehydration: Dehydration can cause muscles, including uterine muscles, to cramp. Drinking water helps muscles relax and reduces the severity of menstrual cramps.
- Reduce bloating: Staying hydrated helps prevent bloating and discomfort during menstruation.
- Improve blood circulation: Adequate water intake ensures good blood circulation, helps relax the uterine muscles and reduces pain caused by obstructed blood flow.
- Flush toxins from the body: Staying hydrated helps flush toxins and reduce inflammation in the body, which can help reduce the severity of menstrual cramps.
