Recently, revenge films and crime horror films have continuously dominated Korean screens. However, fantasy comedy projects with novel plots are gradually regaining their appeal, including "My Royal nemesis".
The work revolves around Shin Seo Ri (Lim Ji Yeon) - an unknown actress who is suddenly possessed by the soul of Kang Dan Sim, a notorious Joseon villain. The journey becomes complicated when she confronts Cha Se Gye (Heo Nam Jun) - a cold-blooded tycoon heir, likened to "products of capitalism".
The film aired the first 2 episodes with average viewership ratings, reaching 4.1% and 5.4% respectively, according to Nielsen Korea.
In the first episode, after waking up in 2026, Dan Sim decides to choose Se Gye as a "shield" to adapt and survive in modern times. She even tries to save his life after feeling that he is at risk of being harmed.
In episode 2, Seo Ri gradually adapts to modern life, from overcoming the strict security system to approach Se Gye to trying her hand at selling goods on television. Notably, a clip related to her suddenly spread on social networks, making Seo Ri's name quickly noticed. This is also the reason Se Gye decided to sign a cooperation contract with her.
Although viewership ratings have not really exploded, "My Royal Enemy" still received many positive feedbacks from audiences. Many opinions assessed that Lim Ji Yeon had an outstanding performance, while the script and hosting style were commented to have a fast pace, creating a sense of entertainment and not being lengthy.
Humorous situations interwoven with dramatic elements also contribute to helping the film create attraction in the early episodes. On the other hand, although the xuyên không motif is no longer new, the film still creates a difference thanks to the handling of situations and acting of the cast. In which, the "chemistry" between Lim Ji Yeon and Heo Nam Jun is a plus point.
According to director Han Tae Seop, the appeal of the film lies in the unpredictable journey of Dan Sim - a Joseon-era villain seeking a second chance of life and building new relationships. According to him, the project combines many colors from romantic comedy, ancient costumes to action and Lim Ji Yeon has "contributed her best" to the role.
For her part, Lim Ji Yeon said that she chose the project because she loves the comedy genre. After a series of psychologically stressful roles, the actress wants to try her hand at a more cheerful and energetic image. Notably, Lim Ji Yeon also confidently declared: "This character will have no less influence than Yeon Jin" (her famous role in the movie "Glory in Hatred").
Meanwhile, Heo Nam Jun plays a man who sees marriage as a business merger deal. The actor believes that even though he is a cold and somewhat villainous character, Cha Se Gye still has clumsy and emotional moments.
