Discussing solutions to develop AI capacity for learners

On October 28, at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-ghN, a scientific conference on Developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) capacity for learners took place.

AI is not only a technology, but is reshaping education and training

Speaking at the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Minh Son - Chairman of the Council, Director of Hanoi National University, said that building an AI competency framework for learners not only meets changes in the labor market but also helps form the ability to use AI tools as an essential skill, similar to the previous foreign language.

However, it is more important to include leadership capacity and proactive creativity in the teaching and learning process, so that students can use AI right in their studies, research and creativity, not just wait until graduation.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that education needs to shift the focus from teaching to learning, from lecture design to designing learning, research, experience and creativity activities, in which AI is a tool to help personalize learning and improve training efficiency.

This model, according to him, needs to be applied from high school to university, ensuring that all learners know, use AI well and effectively - in line with the popularization spirit of Resolution 71.

Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan, Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, said that the remarkable advances in AI are opening up unprecedented opportunities for personalization of learning, supporting research and improving learners' creativity.

However, along with opportunities are ethical challenges, equality in access to technology, in how humans master AI instead of being influenced by it.

To develop AI capacity for learners in a practical, comprehensive manner and with Vietnamese identity - humanity, responsibility, creativity and integration, over the past two years, the school has implemented many activities such as Building an AI Capacity Framework for learners; developing training modules on AI in teaching, research and vocational skills; organizing series of seminars, forums and cooperation programs with businesses, etc.

Need a roadmap for teachers and students to apply AI

Regarding the implementation and application of AI in teaching at the high school level, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhiep, Principal of Chu Van An High School for the Gifted, Hanoi, said that there is a differentiation between provinces and cities, between schools in urban areas and rural areas, between private schools and public schools.

For example, in Hanoi, organizing AI application in private schools is very good and methodical. As for public schools, schools are eager to include AI in training, but are having difficulty in budget issues.

"We are trying to make teachers advise students to apply AI in the smartest way. Most schools do not ban teaching and learning AI, but encourage it, but control AI" - Ms. Nhiep said.

From practical difficulties, Ms. Nhiep proposed that there should be a legal corridor, with goals and roadmaps for students, teachers, and schools to apply and develop AI in teaching and learning. Along with that is the stage of teacher training and basic infrastructure for implementation.

"We need experience, teachers need to be organized, to know which students use AI and which students do not use AI. This is a filter for teachers in checking and evaluating students" - Ms. Nhiep emphasized.

Proposing a 3-layer AI capacity model for Vietnam

Dr. Le Linh Luong, Deputy Director of the ABAII Institute of Blockchain Technology and Artificial Intelligence, said that only when a comprehensive human resource ecosystem is formed, can Vietnam be proactive in the global AI wave, both taking advantage of the benefits and ensuring humanistic and safety factors in technology application.

He proposed a three- stack model of AI capabilities for Vietnam: First, a common awareness, helping all citizens understand how to use AI responsibly, ensure data security; second, applying expertise, helping learners in industries such as economics, education, healthcare know how to integrate AI into work; and third, research & development, where engineers, researchers and startups master the model, algorithms and products "Make in Vietnam".
