On the morning of September 18, the Ministry of Education and Training held the 2025 Higher Education Conference.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, the number of candidates admitted to the university in the first round of 2025 on the system is 773,167 students (an increase of 95,181 candidates compared to 2024) out of the total number of applications is 849,544.
As of September 2, 2025, the number of candidates completing the admission confirmation is 625,477 (an increase of 13.82% compared to 2024). The number of candidates confirmed to be admitted has increased sharply compared to last year, but there are still 147,690 candidates who are admitted but do not enter university, accounting for 19.1%.
According to regulations, if there is no legitimate reason, these candidates will have their results canceled. In fact, in previous years, the situation of students who were admitted but not confirmed to enter the school still occurred because many candidates determined that studying abroad or winning their wishes was not as expected, so they should give up to register for additional admission in the following rounds.
Statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training show that there are 17 admission methods this year. This year, 849,544 candidates are considered for admission with more than 7.6 million applications. Of which, the number of candidates registering for 5 wishes accounted for 39.6% and the number of candidates registering for more than 20 wishes was 6.7%.
"We also count a rate of many candidates registering for wishes but do not know. That is, students register with many wishes but not with the goal of university admission - Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training informed.
Mr. Thao also said that the bright spot is that this year, the industry groups that the Government has paid special attention to in the past are the key technology and engineering sector that has received more applications; the increased standard score for the pedagogical sector shows more interest from society.
Currently, there are 11 universities, 173 public universities and academies nationwide; 67 private universities and institutions with foreign elements.
Regarding the team of university managers and lecturers in 2025, the administrative sector is 35,999 people, the permanent lecturer sector is 82,451 people. As of 2025, the total number of professors and associate professors nationwide is 6,814; the number of PhDs is 29,463.
On the morning of September 18, the Ministry of Education and Training surveyed delegates' opinions on limiting admission wishes with three options, including: Maximum 5, 10 wishes or continuing to not limit the number of wishes as at present.
