Can Tho City is stepping up preparation of necessary conditions to implement teaching 2 sessions/day, especially focusing on the junior high school block. This is an important step to improve the quality of education, reduce pressure on students and meet the requirements of the new General Education Program.
Organizing 2 teaching sessions/day not only helps students consolidate their knowledge right at school but also creates conditions for them to participate in many extracurricular activities, practice soft skills, and develop comprehensively both physically and mentally. With the goal of minimizing the situation of extra classes and ensuring fairness in education, this model is receiving great attention and investment from the city government and the education sector.
On June 19, Ms. Le Thi Thuy Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training (DET) of Can Tho City - said that to ensure effective implementation, this summer, the Department of Education and Training will continue to actively review the facilities of schools. This includes checking the number of classrooms, functional rooms, and teaching equipment to ensure eligibility to welcome students for 2 sessions/day.
Along with that, training and improving the professional qualifications and skills of the teaching staff is also a key factor. Ms. Dung said that teachers need to equip themselves with knowledge and teaching methods suitable for the 2-session/day model, especially experiential activities and life skills education.
Informing Lao Dong in May 2025, the Department of Education and Training of Can Tho said that the whole city has 168 primary schools (including 3 private schools). In terms of facilities, ensure the ratio of 1 classroom/class (each class has 1 separate room). The teacher/class ratio is 1.41.
With those conditions, in the 2024 - 2025 school year, Can Tho has implemented teaching 2 sessions/day for 100% of primary school students according to the 2018 General Education Program; no tuition fee is collected for 2 sessions/day for primary school students; in the 2025 - 2026 school year, teaching 2 sessions/day is guaranteed.

Currently, the city has 70 secondary schools. The rate of classrooms/class in the 2024-2025 school year will reach 0.7 classrooms/classroom; no school will organize 2 sessions/day.
After receiving instructions from the Ministry of Education and Training, the Department of Education and Training advised on developing a specific plan (with a roadmap for each year), increasing the teaching rate of 2 sessions/day per year. Along with that, the Department of Education and Training guides educational institutions to develop a plan to organize teaching and learning 2 sessions/day according to regulations; organizes training and guides educational institutions on developing and implementing a plan to organize teaching and learning 2 sessions/day.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has signed Directive No. 17/CT-TTg on organizing teaching and learning 2 sessions/day and organizing summer activities for children and students.
The Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Education and Training to preside over and coordinate with ministries, agencies and localities to issue documents guiding teaching and learning 2 sessions/day, ensuring clear purpose, clear requirements, clear subjects, clear content, clear forms and methods of organization and implementation, clear results, clear authorities to effectively implement the general education program.
