In recent years, the enrollment target for 10th grade of public high schools in Ho Chi Minh City (region 1 before the merger) has been maintained at about 70,000-77,000 students per year, equivalent to about 65-70% of secondary school graduates, depending on the year.
According to statistics from Lao Dong newspaper, the enrollment rate for 10th grade public schools in Ho Chi Minh City has fluctuated over the years. Among them, some years recorded significantly higher rates.
In 2025, the city has more than 88,000 students completing the secondary school program, the enrollment target of public high schools is 70,070, the enrollment rate reaches about 79%.
In 2024, about 66% of students continue to enter 10th grade public schools. This year, the city has more than 160,000 secondary school graduates, of which more than 98,000 candidates registered for the exam, and high schools enroll more than 77,000 students.
In 2023, public high schools enrolled about 77,000 students. The whole city has nearly 140,000 high school graduates, of which 96,300 registered to take the 10th grade public school entrance exam.
In 2022, Ho Chi Minh City had more than 92,000 candidates taking the 10th grade entrance exam, with a total target of nearly 73,000 public high schools.
In 2021, due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, Ho Chi Minh City did not organize entrance exams but switched to admission based on the average score of the whole 9th grade year. This year, there were 83,300 registered candidates, with a total target of 67,000 students.
In 2026, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training (after the merger), the city currently has more than 169,000 9th grade students, an increase of nearly 43,000 students compared to the previous year.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training sets a target of enrolling more than 180,000 students into public high schools, equivalent to about 70% of students completing the secondary school program. The rest will study at continuing education centers, vocational schools, private schools or other directions.
It is expected that in the next few days, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will announce the enrollment targets for 10th grade public schools of each high school.
The entrance exam will take place on January 1-2. 6. Candidates will take three compulsory subjects including: Literature, Mathematics and Foreign Language (mainly English). Students who register for specialized or integrated classes will take additional specialized or integrated subjects corresponding to their registered aspirations.
