On the evening of October 2, Ho Chi Minh City National University (VNU-HCM) informed that at the 17th Conference Forum of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), taking place from September 29 to October 1, 2025 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai - Deputy Director of VNU-HCM was officially recognized as a TWAS Institute through the ceremony of receiving new members.
Here, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai and Major General, Prof. Dr. People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang - former Deputy Director of the 108 Central Military Hospital were awarded the Certificate of Official Investigation by Prof. Dr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of TWAS in the presence of more than 300 delegates who are scientists from all over the world.
This year, TWAS elected 74 new academicians - the most in TWAS' history. Of which, Brazil and China lead with 10 players, followed by India (9), Malaysia (7), South Africa4. Vietnam, Cuba, Egypt and the United States all have 2 representatives.
The recognition decision takes effect from January 1, 2025, bringing the total number of TWAS academicians to 1,444 people.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was born in 1974, from Quang Ngai, graduated with a degree in Chemistry from Ho Chi Minh City University of General Education (now the University of Natural Sciences, VNU-HCM), was promoted to associate professor in 2014 and professor in 2020.
She is a leading scientist in researching Vietnamese medicinal herbs, with many important contributions to the medical and pharmaceutical industry.
Her research team successfully developed two products to support the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and arthritis from domestic medicinal herbs. To date, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has published more than 80 prestigious international articles.
