The gap in education quality in the largest urban area in the Central Highlands

Thanh Quỳnh |

Buon Ma Thuot City is the central urban area of the Central Highlands. However, the quality of education to train human resources for the future of this city is having a worrying gap.

Concerns about the quality of education

The first concern is the situation of many students dropping out of school (especially at the secondary school level). In the 2023-2024 school year alone, the whole city had 113 secondary school students dropping out. Mr. Nguyen Huu Luat - Head of the Department of Education and Training of Buon Ma Thuot City explained that the quality of mass education is not uniform between regions and schools; education in suburban areas and ethnic minority areas still has many difficulties, leading to the situation of many students dropping out of school.

The quality of education also revealed weaknesses in the results of the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year, in which the percentage of students with an average score below 5 points was still high. On the other hand, although the standard score for 10th grade entrance was not high, many schools did not enroll enough students.

There are 2 public schools that organize entrance exams for grade 10, including Buon Ma Thuot High School and Le Quy Don High School with an entrance score of 15.75 points. However, the results showed that many students did not pass, so the Department of Education and Training of Dak Lak province decided to lower the entrance score to 13 points. The remaining schools that organize entrance exams also had to lower the entrance score for the second time to have enough students as required, such as Le Duan High School, which lowered the score by 2 points, from 32 points to 30 points (with the additional condition that the average score of the 9th grade semester subject is 6.9 points in the case of equal to the total admission score).

Regarding the 10th grade admission work, Mr. Do Tuong Hiep - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Dak Lak province admitted that it was not done well, there were many failing scores, and the results were low. "When supervising and checking, the Dak Lak Provincial People's Council found that there were students with a total score of 7.5-8.0 but got 0 points in the Math exam. Thus, the quality of teaching in schools, including Buon Ma Thuot City, needs to review the results" - Mr. Hiep commented.

There are still staff and teachers who are passive in their work.

According to Mr. Vu Van Hung - Chairman of Buon Ma Thuot City People's Committee, in 2024, the city's total budget for education alone is more than 966 billion VND, not including other sources, but the quality of education has not had many breakthroughs. Mr. Hung frankly said that a number of cadres, managers, and teachers have not met the requirements in the new situation.

“A number of managers and teachers are not dedicated to their profession, are not concerned, are not worried about how to improve the quality of education. If we do not innovate, the quality of education will remain average, and some schools will even decline,” said Mr. Hung.

It is known that from now until 2027, the city will complete investment in educational facilities. However, the number of teachers for schools is still lacking at most levels while the city does not have the staff to recruit, so it has to combine classes, reduce classes, and reduce enrollment.

Mr. Vu Van Hung also requested the Department of Education and Training of Dak Lak province to increase the application of new educational models to improve the quality of education.
