La Nguyen Gia Hy is one of more than 1,000 students awarded graduation certificates in April 2025 by the University of Technology (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City).
The male student was a former Math major at the School for the Gifted and was admitted directly to Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology for his achievement of winning the Second Prize in the National Excellent Student Competition in Math.
He said that since he was a child, he has been interested in the impressive capabilities of Artificial Intelligence, especially when he learned about systems that can play chess - such as Google's AlphaGo that defeated the world's leading chess player in the game of surrounding chess.
Later, the appearance of generative AI models such as ChatGPT or Deepseek made me even more curious and wanted to go deeper into the direction of Artificial Intelligence in the field of Computer Science.
Sharing about her learning secret, Hy said that making good use of her time and planning clearly are the prerequisites to help her achieve good results.
In particular, Hy often takes the initiative to study basic and specialized subjects before the summer vacation. This helps me have more time to review for the exam more carefully at the end of the semester and spend time on major exercises.
He also spent time reading the textbook carefully to comprehen the lesson comprehensively, instead of just studying through slides and proactively finding more documents from YouTube and taking exams from other schools to broaden the perspective.
A factor that helps Hy graduate early is to carefully research the school regulations and develop a suitable roadmap.
In addition to studying and researching, Hy always tries to maintain balance, by reading and listening to music to relax after stressful school hours.
"On weekends, I often play sports as a way to exercise and stay positive. I also proactively learn English and participate in internships at businesses to prepare for a global working environment in the future. I believe that developing soft skills and hands-on experience will help me become more confident and adapt better to professional and academic environments around the world," Hy said.
Regarding her plans after graduation, Hy said that she will study postgraduate programs specializing in Artificial Intelligence at universities with research strengths in this field.
At the same time, I also hope to continue to participate in projects applying AI to practical issues, especially in areas with positive social impacts such as waste classification, treatment, automatic detection of errors and optimization of operations in production.
"I believe that combining a solid academic foundation and practical experience will help me develop comprehensively in both research capacity and application implementation capability. I prioritize master's or doctoral programs with full scholarships in countries with developed education such as Europe, the US, as well as some Asian countries such as Korea and Singapore," Hy said.
Associate Professor, Dr. Quan Thanh Tho - Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, assessed Hy as an excellent student. I have a good knowledge base, high self-study ability and always take my studies and research seriously.
"When participating in my research group, I showed clear initiative and progress. He researched many in-depth documents, grasped the problem quickly and was not afraid to propose new approaches," Associate Professor, Dr. Quan Thanh Tho shared.
This time, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology organized the awarding of graduation certificates to 1,359 doctors, masters, engineers, architects, and bachelors.
