Potentially unsafe
On January 7, a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper noted that in the 2-story, 12-room building of Dinh Ban Secondary School, the paint on the walls was peeling off in patches, making it look unsightly.
In particular, many windows of this school building have damaged hinges. To ensure safety, the school had to tie them with steel wire.
At the 2-storey, 8-room department building opposite, the deterioration is even more severe as patches of plaster from the ceiling are peeling off, revealing rusty iron cores inside.
In addition to the dilapidated classrooms, the school's library also leaks, the fence on the side of the school is dilapidated and broken for many years and has not been rebuilt, the school yard is degraded, the tiles are peeling...
A female teacher at the school said that on rainy and windy days, teachers have to tell students not to walk or sit in cracked or peeling ceilings to avoid having plaster fall on their heads.
Hope to be renovated and repaired promptly
Mr. Nguyen Minh Khuong - Acting Principal of Dinh Ban Secondary School - said that the school's 2-storey, 12-room building was built and put into use 20 years ago. In 2018, this building was repainted. However, for about 2 years now, the paint has been peeling off in large patches, making it look unsightly.
The 2-storey block of 8 department rooms is even more worrying and unsafe when the ceiling plaster is peeling off, posing a potential safety risk to teachers and students.
“We have to check regularly. When we find any cracks or peeling spots, we proactively use a pole to poke them down to avoid them falling on teachers or students' heads,” Mr. Khuong shared.
According to Mr. Khuong, the school is currently short of 1 classroom, and from next year it will be short of 2 classrooms.
The school has also recommended that superiors pay attention and allocate budget to repair degraded items.
In 2024, the People's Committee of Thach Ha district also inspected and considered the school's recommendations.
However, implementing administrative unit arrangement, from January 1, 2025, Dinh Ban commune will be merged into Ha Tinh city.
Therefore, the school now hopes that the People's Committee of Ha Tinh city will pay attention and allocate budget to build new classrooms and repair 2 school buildings, the library and some other degraded and damaged items to ensure better teaching and learning at the school.
Mr. Pham Cong Tung - Chairman of Dinh Ban Commune People's Committee - said that Dinh Ban is one of the five communes affected by the Thach Khe iron mining project for many years, so the facilities, traffic infrastructure, schools, and the commune People's Committee hall are degraded and slow to be repaired and upgraded.
Of particular concern are the two classrooms at Dinh Ban Secondary School that are severely degraded, with peeling walls and ceilings, posing a potential safety risk for teachers and students.
Therefore, the local government recommends that superiors pay attention and soon have a renovation and repair project to ensure safety and aesthetics, helping the school to perform well its functions and teaching tasks in the area. Thereby, contributing to improving the quality of education in this difficult coastal commune.
