Creating an environment to practice lifelong learning habits

Minh Châu |

With the goal of creating lifelong learning habits for students, many teachers have actively created an environment for them to explore and study by themselves.

The 2018 General Education Program has entered its 5th year of implementation. The program is built in the direction of developing students' qualities and abilities; creating a learning and training environment to help students develop harmoniously physically and mentally. From there, help them become active, confident learners, know how to apply active learning methods to perfect their basic knowledge and skills, and be aware of choosing a career and studying for life.

Understanding this, Ms. Phan Minh Nguyet - a teacher at Hong Thai High School (Hanoi) - has diversified methods of communication, creating an environment for students to explore their own knowledge and themselves.

I always organize classes with diverse experiences and skills. For example, I often let them get into character, design infographics or compose stories and poems. These activities help them access and proactively learn about the work naturally, developing a self-discovery mindset - Ms. Nguyet shared.

In addition, as a homeroom teacher, Ms. Nguyet also finds that it is extremely important to give children the freedom to express their emotions.

Lifetime learning is not only about self-study of books but also about discovering the world around you and yourself. Therefore, in addition to learning activities, I also actively organize debates or create space for students to express their emotions and dreams during class activities" - Ms. Nguyet shared more.

Referring to the development of lifelong learning ability, Mr. Pham Xuan Ky - a teacher at Luong The Vinh High School (Quang Binh) - recalled the story of an old student.

In 2017, a parent asked me to teach a student to switch from block A to block B, but because I did not have time, I could only guide the student to self-study by providing documents and exchanging messages. As a result, with just self-study, he achieved 8.25 subjects in Biology and passed the entrance exam to Vinh Medical University" - Mr. Xuan Ky recalled.

From this story, Mr. Ky believes that students are completely capable of self-study and exploring everything. What teachers need to do is create an environment for students to form self-study ability and other skills.

Teachers should help students develop the qualities of eager to learn and improve - qualities that are very important in lifelong learning. When they have those qualities, they will always seek opportunities to learn and develop themselves, improving their adaptability in all situations" - Mr. Ky shared.

Having worked in the school union for many years, Mr. Xuan Ky also focuses on organizing extracurricular activities, helping students develop a mindset of self-discovery, the ability to explore and learn.

The whole school organizes many clubs chaired and implemented by students such as the Youth Shock Club, Music Club, Olympia Club, Press Club - Mr. Ky said and added that the school only plays an orientational role, creating an environment for students to work on their own and learn from each other.

These activities help students develop creative thinking and be proactive in discovering knowledge around them, opening up skills to serve their learning after leaving school such as group work and critical thinking.

Creating an environment to help children have the habit of lifelong learning is extremely necessary. Because lifelong learning is more important than any subject. I always want them to understand that studying is not only about school knowledge but also a long journey - Mr. Pham Xuan Ky shared more.
