Universities in Ho Chi Minh City warn of scams about international student exchange programs, study abroad

HCMC - A university has warned students to be vigilant against scams to participate in international student exchange programs and study abroad.

Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine said that currently, the situation of criminal activities in cyberspace is relatively complicated, with many sophisticated forms; in the field of education, there are many forms of fraud related to student exchange programs, international summer camp, study abroad scholarships, etc.

Scammers often use tricks such as impersonating educational institutions, state agencies, or creating fake websites and social media accounts to invite students to register to participate, asking participants to provide personal information, submit documents and pay fees to steal information and appropriate property of victims.

According to Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, despite warnings, the school has recently recorded complaints from students' families about being scammed by scammers for forging school documents to defraud and appropriate assets of great value.

In order to raise vigilance, awareness of crime prevention and control, avoid being deceived by scammers and losing property, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine informed that at present, the school is not implementing any study abroad or international student exchange programs.

Activities in collaboration with Johannes Gutenberg Mainz University, Federal Republic of Germany are only for students of classes in the Faculty of Vietnam - Germany Medicine. All information (if any) about international student exchange programs, study abroad, ... is posted publicly on the school's electronic information portal, and sent to students via personal online accounts or personal emails issued by the school to students via email from units under the school (email with link @pnt.edu.vn).

Parents and students need to be vigilant and carefully research information about student exchange programs, international summer camp, study abroad scholarships, ... from subjects outside the school.

In case of receiving suspicious information, parents and students need to contact the authorities and units for support in verification, answers and instructions on handling.

For suspicious information, unverified information, parents and students absolutely do not provide personal information, personal financial information, do not fulfill any financial requirements to avoid being scammed and having their property stolen.

Recently, many universities have continuously notified learners to be vigilant against scams such as: Paying tuition fees to get a fee exemption, forging invitations to international student meetings or requiring money transfers to receive entrance exam papers, etc.

On June 5, at a regular press conference, Ho Chi Minh City Police Department requested people to be vigilant and avoid being scammed when registering for real-life experience courses such as police, military, ... for their children.

According to Ho Chi Minh City Police, taking advantage of parents' interest in the above reality programs, the subjects have built many scenarios to defraud and appropriate property such as creating websites, social networking sites with the form of impersonating agencies and businesses... to introduce extracurricular education models, practical experiences above; using online advertising services to access and bring fraudulent content to victims.
