Shocked by school violence
From the case of an 11th grade male student in Thanh Hoa stabbing a 12th grade friend to death right after school, to the case of a 10th grade male student in Hanoi who was kidnapped by a group of students and had his motorbike license plate taken. The continuous occurrence of acts of violence and humiliation of classmates has caused public opinion to ask the question: What is happening in the educational environment, when children can harm each other so much?
I read information about recent school violence cases that have caused a heartbreaking recovery. As a parent, no one can bear to see people being tortured and insulted like that. I think of my child, if he/she is unfortunately in that situation, or worse, if he/she is the one who causes the act of violence, how much pain will it be" - Ms. Nguyen Thi Tho - a parent in Hanoi sadly.
This parent also hopes that the education sector and the whole society will take the work of educating students about ethics and life skills more seriously, so that similar tragedies do not recur.

School discipline needs to be tightened
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam - Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Educational Psychology, Chairman of the Board of Education of Dinh Tien Hoang High School (Hanoi) - said that this is not a new story, but has existed for many years.
"Student age is the stage of maturity, when they are prone to stumbles and deviate from standards. Although the education sector and the whole society have made great efforts to prevent it, school violence incidents still occur continuously and cannot be stopped. This is a reality that forces us to look back - Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam commented.
The Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Educational Psychology said that to prevent school violence, it is necessary to focus on three key factors, including ethics, management and legality.
"The first thing is that educational work must be suitable for the psychology and age of students. We educate about life values, life skills, and keep schools safe and happy. Second, the management in schools must be strict, in addition to the homeroom teachers, there must be a supervisory system. And thirdly, the law, especially law enforcement agencies, needs to regularly coordinate and support schools in preventing and handling school violence, thereby creating a safe and healthy educational environment for students" - Dr. Lam proposed a solution.
As a homeroom teacher for many years, Ms. Lang Thanh Tra - a teacher at Dinh Tien Hoang High School (Hanoi) - believes that preventing deviation from standards, especially school violence, needs to be done regularly and systematically.
According to Ms. Tra, first of all, teachers need to focus on educating school culture in the school's own style. Thereby, helping them understand the values of respect, love and solidarity. Along with that, teachers need to pay special attention, building a class collective according to the "happy classroom" model, where students can share, support and develop together.
Every week, I monitor and evaluate the attitude and behavior of each child to promptly grasp unusual manifestations. In addition, I always coordinate closely with parents and schools to promptly detect and support cases with signs of deviation" - Ms. Tra said.
When school violence occurred, Ms. Tra said that the most important thing was for teachers to stay calm to help students solve the problem in a humane way. I always carefully investigate the causes from both sides, avoid hasty conclusions, and at the same time coordinate with parents and the board of directors to take appropriate measures to help them realize their mistakes and correct them, Ms. Tra shared.
