Consequences of planning schools on main roads
Traffic congestion is not only a problem on major roads but also a constant fear in front of school gates in Da Nang, especially during rush hour. This situation not only makes it difficult to pick up and drop off students but also poses many potential traffic accident risks. According to some parents, when picking up and dropping off their children, many parents park their vehicles on the sidewalk, even on the road, causing chaos and traffic jams.
This situation also occurs at some primary schools such as Hong Quang Primary School, Nguyen Van Troi Primary School (Lien Chieu District), Le Lai Primary School (Ngu Hanh Son District), Ly Cong Uan Primary School (Hai Chau District), Trung Vuong School (Hai Chau District)...
“After school, many parents park their motorbikes on the street to pick up their children. Or during rush hour, the heavy traffic and students rushing out to play and run around while waiting for their families to pick them up creates a chaotic scene in front of the school gate,” said Nguyen Tho Lam, a parent who was picking up his child.
According to Mr. Lam, some schools are located on Yen Bai Street (Hai Chau District). This street has a long line of cars going both ways, and vehicles also go both ways. When it rains, it is extremely difficult for people, parents, and even students to travel.
According to the Department of Transport of Da Nang City, one of the reasons for the above situation is that key schools are almost all located on the main roads of the city. On the National Highways, the number of schools is also very large. On National Highway 1A, there are 24 schools, including junior high schools and primary schools. On Ton Duc Thang Street, there are 13 schools, and on National Highway 14B, there are 11 schools.
Re-planning schools, reducing traffic congestion
According to the Department of Transport of Da Nang City, to overcome the traffic congestion during rush hour at school gates, this unit determined that these schools need to be re-planned to minimize schools located right on the main traffic routes of the city. In which, priority is given to considering the option of exchanging this location to other routes.
Second, it is necessary to coordinate with the Department of Education and Training in upgrading school routes to limit cross-schooling, which is currently concentrated in the central area of the city. The Department will also build bus routes to schools to support students in commuting and overcome traffic congestion.
“Regarding immediate solutions, we highly appreciate the safety models in front of school gates of schools such as Tran Cao Van and Nguyen Hue. We also established teams to support localities in overcoming traffic congestion. At the same time, we will build parking bays so that vehicles can enter and overcome this situation,” said Mr. Bui Hong Trung, Director of the Department of Transport of Da Nang City.
According to the Department of Transport of Da Nang City, the authorities have applied temporary measures such as instructing parents to arrange vehicles and park in the right places. Applying measures to strictly handle violations of stopping and parking in the wrong place, vehicles such as rickshaws, street vendors, businesses, and traders encroaching and obstructing traffic... Instructing students and parents to increase the use of buses, not to ride motorbikes to school, not to encroach on the roadway or sidewalk when picking up and dropping off children...
