At noon on March 14, the forces of the Vietnam Railways Authority and functional units are still handling the freight train derailment incident in the Hai Van Pass area, passing through Da Nang.
Previously, on the same morning, cargo train AH1 when traveling to Km769+850, Hai Van - Hai Van Nam section, an incident occurred. Three locomotive axles derailed, causing the train to be trapped on the tracks.
Records at the scene show that the right side of the railway track in the direction of the train was bent and broken. Some sections of the railway track were deformed after being strongly impacted.
According to initial information from the railway industry, the cause was determined to be rocks falling from the pass slope onto the rails. The impact force caused the rails to break, leading to the locomotive derailing when the train passed.
The incident caused the North-South railway section through Hai Van Pass to temporarily stop operating to ensure safety. Railway infrastructure management and rescue units are focusing on overcoming the scene, repairing rails and removing locomotives from the accident area.
While waiting for handling, the railway industry is implementing a plan to transfer passengers by road through Hai Van Pass.
The passenger transport team of Da Nang station said that the unit coordinated with functional forces to transfer passengers from Da Nang station to Lang Co station, Hue province by car. At both ends of the station, passengers are arranged to board trains to continue their journey. Currently, there are four trains that have to organize passenger transfers. Each train has about 100 to 150 people.
Hai Van Pass is a special section on the North-South railway axis, nearly 20 km long, passing through many tunnels and steep terrain areas. The railway line in this area has been operating for many years, and some infrastructure items show signs of degradation.
Previously, the Vietnam Railways Authority had proposed to the Ministry of Construction to develop a project to renovate the railway line through the Hai Van Pass area in the period 2026 – 2031. The project aims to upgrade infrastructure and overcome capacity bottlenecks on the section from Vinh to Nha Trang.
