On September 14, according to Hai Phong Electronic Information Portal: Bayview Cat Ba Co., Ltd., the unit managing Dong Bai - Cai Vieng ferry terminal, has announced the adjustment of ferry schedule, applied from September 1, 2026 to the end of December 31, 2026.
Accordingly, the ferry terminal opens from 5 am, operating hours are scheduled until 6 pm daily. Depending on weather conditions and the number of passengers, the terminal's operating hours can be extended to 7 pm. During operating hours, ferry trips are arranged alternately between Cai Vieng and Dong Bai terminals. The first trip departs from Cai Vieng terminal at 5 am, arriving at Dong Bai terminal at 5:30 am. Then, trips are organized continuously throughout the day, with a distance of 30-40 minutes depending on the type of ferry.
For self-propelled ferries from 180 tons or more, trips are arranged at many time slots during the day, from early morning to late afternoon. Meanwhile, self-propelled ferries under 100 tons are arranged at some suitable time slots, serving the needs of transporting vehicles and goods according to regulations. The last trip departs from 5:30 PM and arrives at the opposite terminal at 6:00 PM.
According to the announcement of the management unit, 20-ton self-propelled ferries are arranged with 4 trips/day to ensure traffic safety in emergency cases. Self-propelled ferries under 100 tons serving the transportation of vehicles carrying fire and explosives are arranged with 2 trips/day according to regulations. Based on the actual traffic situation at the wharf, the Wharf Command will proactively adjust the departure time, with a maximum distance between ferry trips of 40 minutes, and at the same time arrange appropriate ferry types, ensuring efficient operation, cost savings and notifying passengers at the wharf to grasp information.
At this ferry terminal, in the summer, due to the sudden increase in the number of tourists visiting Cat Ba Island, there are many days of congestion, tourists spend a lot of time waiting for the ferry to cross to the island or vice versa. After summer, the number of people traveling by ferry decreases, so basically there is no longer congestion, and the time people travel by ferry is also faster.
The adjustment of ferry schedules contributes to ensuring that waterway transport activities through the Dong Bai - Cai Vieng route are maintained stably, meeting the increasing travel needs of people, tourists and means of transportation of goods between the mainland and the Cat Hai special zone.
